Did you know “How are ships repaired?”. Depending on the nature of the processes that lead to a change in the technical condition of the ship’s elements, ship repairs are divided into scheduled and unscheduled.
Types of ship repair
- Planned;
- Unscheduled;
- Emergency;
- Included in the scheduled warning system;
- Not included in the planning and warning system;
- Warranty;
- Classification repair;
- Preventive docking.
In order to examine the damage to the underwater parts of the ship and eliminate them, the ship must be towed to a special repair facility – a dock. Depending on the design, there are dry and floating docks.
How are ships repaired: Dry dock
The dry dock is a reinforced concrete pool separated from the water area by a gate. When they are opened, the water level in the pool rises, and the ship is towed to the dock by means of special mechanisms. By gradually pumping out the water, the vessel is fixed on the supports. After the dock is completely drained, the inspection and repair of the ship begins. And after the work is completed, the chamber is filled with water again, and the ship goes back.
Floating dock
A floating dock is a large platform bounded on two sides by walls. Between them are empty tanks that keep the dock afloat. These containers are filled with water. Under the weight of which the platform sinks to a depth corresponding to the size of the ship. Next, the vessel is towed to the platform. Then the pumps pump out the water from the tanks. The ship is securely fixed on the piers of the site for further repairs. After repairing the damage, the ship is taken out into the water area in the same way.
